Should we use Google's pay per click?

Our church does not like to spend money for marketing.  Is there any reason we should try to encourage the usage of pay per click from Google?

There are some very good things about trying to use Google's pay per click:

  • You can limit your daily budget to meet your needs
  • You can target specific demographics, such as age, gender, and location. This can especially helpful if you are looking to get visibility for new local church members
  • You can advertise for a short period of time. Say you wanted to advertise you a concert you are having in your church, this would be a perfect opportunity to take advantage of Google pay per click marketing opportunities

However, there are definitely other good methods for advertising that might be just as good. For example, if you did have a concert at your local church, you may want to look into announcing this at a Christian concert website. You can actually take advantage of your Church's New Church Center account to post an event to get some added publicity. Or maybe just simply gathering emails that you can send announcements to over time.

The one main thing you need to remember when using Google's pay per clicks is the 'landing page' (page where users arrive after clicking) should encourage the user to perform an action you want them to perform. So if you are trying to get them to sign up for an email list, call your office, or come to your church, make sure that you are making this action easy for them to do. From our experience, getting users to you website using pay per click can be fairly easy. Getting them to perform the action or actions you want them to perform is a much harder task. I suspect that some healthy link building and social networking make take you just as far without the added cost.
