Audio or Video Podcasting

Hi, we are considering changing our podcasting from Audio to Video.

Questions:

  • Will this require a lot of work?
  • Does it mean that less of our congregation will be able to listen to the podcasts if we use video instead of audio?
  • Do we need to include both versions?

Comments

The process is the same whether using audio or video podcasting for your church website. However, working with video files just simply takes longer. Audio files are smaller and require far less data to create and work with.

The way of the world appears to be going to video, however, with church services, we have found that many users are still very happy simply listening to the audio versions and do not necessarily need to see the speaker. A quality audio copy is far better than a bad video copy.

To answer your specific questions:

Typically, it will not require a lot of extra work, though it does ultimately depend on who and what software they are using to create the podcasts.

There is a small possibility that some users may have difficulty using the video podcasts. Possibly due to Internet download speed issues or possibly due to what compression the video files were created with. Audio has a few main standard file types. Video has many and are constantly changing and evolving.

Likely, if you are going to include a video podcast, I would suggest also having an audio version available. Since it is not all that much extra work to convert your video to audio, it is a great advantage to your listeners to have both options available.

Just a reminder, New Church Center does have the option to include your podcasts within your church page at New Church Center. Please look at the "Additional Information" section where you edit your account.
