Sitemaps

We have read a number of articles on using sitemaps for getting your site better searched on on the Internet.  Do you suggest that we create a sitemap to submit to search engines?

It does depend on a number of things. Here are a few guidelines you may want to follow to decide:

Use a Sitemap for your Church Website if:

  • You are using flash or some form of advanced javascript for your website menus
  • You have a large number of pages on your church website and want to make sure search engines know which pages are most important
  • You have someone who is familiar with making sitemaps to help. I say this because if you do have someone available to create the sitemap, they are usually helpful when created correctly.

Do not use a Sitemap for your Church Website when:

  • You only have a few pages on your site and they can all be linked to from the home page
  • You have a large site, but do not have an automated sitemap generator. Large sites can be extremely time consuming to create a proper sitemap for.

In short, if you have the capabilities, it is suggested to do your best to create a quality sitemap for your Church's website. There is definite search engine optimization value in doing so.
