INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Do you enjoy being alone in nature? Do you desire to have moments when you can hike alone and just enjoy the silence and the beauty? When you have such opportunities, how do those experiences affect you?
I love and try to take advantage of any opportunity to be out in nature. In particular, when alone on a dark night gazing into the star-spangled heavens is a truly humbling experience. At such moments, surrounded by silence and grandeur, I feel not only humbled, but also revitalized. Truthfully, what happens when alone in nature is hard to put into words.
The psalmist, however, manages to put into words just what experience he has when he is alone in God’s creation. You can almost hear him exclaim the words, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1).
Besides being refreshed and revitalized after such experiences, I am aware of one other thought. Maybe it is one of which you are aware, as well. It is the question, “Who am I in the midst of all this grandeur? I feel so insignificant.”
If you have ever shared such moments and such thoughts, today’s psalm ought to be of particular interest.
May God bless you as we study it together – and may his presence fill your life.
