On this New Year’s Eve, our thoughts turn toward words like change and growth. We face questions like, What will be different for me in the new year? What are my goals? In what ways will I deepen and change? What are the ruts I’d like to get out of? What are the new habits I’d like to form? The threshold of a new year means new opportunities, new ventures, new risks, new dangers. What will it hold? We consider such things today in our service and sermon.
Charles Paul Conn reminds us that when we strive to move toward something new and big, the larger view is critical. Here are his words: “Looking through a peephole is no way to stay motivated when you’re moving toward a goal. The big view is important. It takes big dreams – big goals, big rewards, big faith – to keep us moving through obstacles and fatigue and discouragement. To maintain momentum requires constantly reminding ourselves what we are working toward.” And someone else wrote, “Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at something that doesn’t really matter.”
I urge you, then, to wrestle with such questions and pinpoint specific goals. And then, by the grace of Jesus, make 2012 a year characterized by positive growth and change!
