The Discipline of Giving
7700 Carroll Avenue
Takoma Park, MD 20912
Classes officially began Monday here on the campus of Washington Adventist University. As is my custom, before I begin each lecture, I always take five minutes to share a brief devotional thought, along with taking time to receive prayer requests from the class. The thought I shared to begin this new semester was based on one of my favorite verses, Philippians 2:13 which says:
“for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
Here, the apostle Paul describes in a nutshell the work of sanctification in the life of the believer. First and foremost he makes it clear that this work of making us more like Christ is a twofold work of God via the inner working of the Holy Spirit in our lives. First, God’s Spirit plants within us the desire to please him. But as important as desire is, most of us are painfully aware that desire alone is not enough. But then Paul says that God not only gives us the desire to live a life that pleases him, but he also gives us the power to live the obedient life. Amen for the complete work that God desires to perform in my life and yours (Philippians 1:6).
I look forward to our time of corporate worship this Sabbath and I am confident that God’s presence will be in the midst of his people. My message for this Sabbath is titled The Discipline of Giving and is based on 2 Corinthians 8:1-15. I encourage you to read this inspiring story of a people who, despite their plight, refused to allow their circumstances to prevent them from caring for the needs of others.
