DTR

In his book titled, Not a Fan, author Kyle Idleman has designated an entire chapter to what he calls, DTR. In case you are not familiar with what DTR stands for, it means Define the Relationship. According to Idleman, DTR is the official talk that takes place in a romantic relationship to determine the level of commitment. In other words, it's when a couple is being forced to come to grips with where things really stand. The reason this is so important is because of the expectations that one party in the relationship may have that the other may not be aware of or quite frankly, may not be willing to meet. And there is nothing worse than being in a relationship where one individual believes that things are further along than they truly are. In many cases, having a DTR moment forces one to come to the realization that his or her expectations for this relationship may never be fully realized.
As we continue our journey through the season of Advent here at Sligo, I believe that it is imperative that as God's children, we have our own DTR moment. Not with one another, but with God. When you think about it, what better time for us to come to grips with where our relationship with God stands than during the season where we celebrate the birth of Christ?
And as we pause to define our relationship with Him, I believe that this calls for us to be brutally honest not only with God, but with ourselves as well. In essence what I am saying is that it's time for us to do an honest assessment of where our relationship truly stands. You know its one thing to think you are committed to a relationship only to discover that the commitment that is needed simply isn't there. In other words, we need to decide whether we are a committed follower of Jesus or simply one of His many adoring fans.
