NO ROOM

In my message from last Sabbath titled, "O Come Let Us Adore Him," I shared with the Sligo family the story of the time when Jesus was invited to the home of Simon, who by the way just happened to be a Pharisee. What made this event unusual was not that Jesus was invited to a Pharisee's home, but it was the treatment, or should I say the lack of treatment that He received. There were none of the customary acts of etiquette that someone in Jesus' day would expect to receive upon entering the home as a guest. Simon did not greet Jesus with the customary kiss, which can be compared to the handshake today. Jesus was not given the opportunity to have his feet washed by a servant designated to perform this duty. You would think that the least Simon could do would be to provide Jesus with a basin of water so that he could do it himself, but such was not the case.

Well, I guess you could say that the assessment I gave of how Jesus was treated isn't quite accurate. There was someone in the home that was willing to give Jesus the kind of treatment that He deserved, but it just wasn't Simon. In Luke 7 we are told that there was a woman, who possessed a somewhat soiled reputation throughout the city, who was willing to provide Christ with the customary acts of etiquette. Not only that, but she kissed His feet, and she washed them with her tears. Then she dried them with her hair. If that wasn't enough to arouse curiosity, she then proceeded to pour expensive perfume on his feet as well. It is clear from all that took place that day, that although Simon had invited Jesus into his home, unlike the woman, he still wasn't willing to invite Him into his heart.  

 
From the moment that Jesus entered this cruel world as a babe in Bethlehem, there has always been the issue of not being able to find room, whether in an inn some two thousand years ago, or today in the hearts of mankind. There is much celebration being made during this season in our homes with the decorating of trees and the hanging of lights, but can we find any room for Jesus in our hearts? If Jesus is truly the reason for the season, then shouldn't we make room for Him where it really counts? Something to think about as we continue to celebrate this holiday season.
