In 1988, singer songwriter Bobby McFerrin released a song that became such an instant hit, that it could be heard on the lips of just about everyone, whether they like myself, could actually sing or not. The song was titled, Don't Worry, Be Happy. McFerrin's song became such a tremendous success that it received the coveted Grammy award in 1989 in the category of Song of the Year. And what made this even more amazing was that it was not a composition full of melodious orchestration, but rather a simple a cappella tune where Mcferrin overdubbed voice sounds in place of instruments. Even though this song was recorded over 20 years ago, whenever it is played, you will still find people singing those familiar words, "Don't Worry, Be Happy!"

I am of the opinion that the reason this simple song became so popular is because it struck such a universal chord in the hearts of everyone who heard it. Think about it for a moment. Is there anyone that you can think of that doesn't truly want to be happy? Now I understand that what is defined as happiness for one is not the same for everyone. But the fact still remains, that regardless of how we define it, we all crave it. And not only do we crave it, but in many cases, we are willing to do just about anything to obtain it.

Today we live in a world that despite our attempts to obtain the happiness that we so desperately long for, regardless of our sincerity, our attempts consistently fail to hit the mark. Could it be the problem is not with our sincerity, but with what we believe will bring us the happiness that we crave? Are we looking for happiness in all the wrong places and in all the wrong people?

My sermon for this the first Sabbath of 2012 will plunge deeper into this issue with a message I've titled, The Pursuit of Happiness. I am looking forward to seeing you there. Happy New Year and may God bless you richly!
