Do Over

As I prepare this edition of the eWeekend, I do so with great enthusiasm, because today I am celebrating my birthday. It was just 53 years ago on this day that I was born to Charles and Nannie Tapp in Evansville, Indiana. It is still hard for me to grasp the fact that I have reached this stage in my life. When I was a child I would always be amused when I would hear my parents say that time would pass by so quickly that by the time I had reached their age, I would be asking, "where did all the time go?" It was just yesterday, or so it seems, that I was in college. Now my youngest daughter Victoria, who is the last of our three children attending college, is currently being taught by one of my former professors. My, how time does fly.
I'm not sure if this happens with you, but whenever I celebrate a birthday, I always take this time as an opportunity to reflect over, not merely the events of the past year, but of my entire life as well. And as I take this journey into my past, I always pause to wonder how my life would be if I had done some things differently? What if I hadn't made certain mistakes? What if I knew then what I know now? In 2002 there was a television program that used this idea of being able to go back to a certain period in one's life and do it over. The series was appropriately titled; you guessed it, "Do Over."
But here's the thing about life that is so unforgiving and that is that there are no "do overs." Once the time has passed, you can't go back and live it again. And since there are no "do overs," then the key to living a life with no regrets is to make wise choices in the present. Proverbs 3:5, 6 reminds us that the key to choosing wisely is by not leaning on our wisdom, but instead relying on the wisdom of God to direct our lives. In other words, we need to shift our weight from placing complete confidence in our wisdom and understanding, and begin to lean, or place our weight completely on the wisdom that comes to us from God and His unchanging Word.
